A hidden gem that you would be forgiven for missing as you drove through the seaside town of Southport, Merseyside. The Wagging Tail, Hound and Human Cafe is a small but quaint establishment located on Botanic Road. The bold elegant letter above it's window proudly proclaiming 'Where dogs take their servants', and indeed it is hard to disagree when following our spoiled bichons through the door.
Boasting 3 rooms and an enclosed courtyard, there are plenty of safe seating options available despite being located adjacent to the road. Especially nervous dogs and their owners would be advised to visit in quiet hours as it can get quite packed and busy with staff passing back and forth.
The multiple menus are budget friendly laminated paper, the contents including the expected items from a coffee shop, with a pleasingly wide variety of hot drinks. More excitingly a dog only menu is provided, with items from an in-store 'Pawtisserie'. I had to admit the quirky names made me smile, and we ordered the 'Woofle' to share between the spoiled fluffs.
Also available is food for the human servants! Both vegetarian and vegan options available, which is appreciated, and some lovely desserts including waffles, ice cream and breakfasts. Portions are VERY decent, and we left with full and sugary bellies.
But back to the fun stuff, Pupcake, dog ice cream, Puppichino, and Dog Afternoon Tea??? We will have to return to sample all these unusual items!
We visited on a Saturday and while there were seats available it was very busy, with the backroom being a throughway for the staff between the kitchen and the register. The staff were friendly and pleasant, certainly dog lovers, and the waitress definitely deserved a tip rushing back and forth with orders while still making time to say hello to the canine guests.
As well as a Pawtisserie which is available for take-out, The Wagging Tail has a small gift shop at the entrance with dog themed gifts and accessories. While seated you can also enjoy a book in their back room while admiring the dog themed decor!
All being considered I would highly recommend a visit, especially if you live locally.
